In the complex – and to a certain extent bizarre – scent landscape of Times Square, there are three elements that are far apart, explaining the irresistible fascination of this city within a city: the food sold by street vendors, where business people and tourists come together; the prostitutes with their vulgar perfume and shiny lipstick; the smell of tyres and asphalt, motor oil and exhaust fumes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlessandro and Riccardo love Manhattan, and although Times Square has changed (it is safer today than it used to be, but New York friends refer to it as ‘Disneyland’), it is still a must-see on every business trip to New York.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe nose chosen to interpret Times Square is Bruno Jovanovic, a superstar perfumer. The idea of working with Bruno came about a long time ago. As you know, Bruno worked with Laudamiel on the development of Fierce when he was still very young (in 2002, he was just 30). Whether you like Fierce or not, it was definitely a milestone in the fragrance industry – for better or worse. The way A\u0026amp;F flooded their stores (and Fifth Avenue) with Fierce became a case study in sensory (fragrance) marketing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCould there have been a better nose to develop the fragrance landscape of Times Square? There was no budget limit for the creation of Times Square (as with every other Masque Milano creation) and the entire IFF staff was incredibly helpful. It was an extremely interesting and enriching experience to visit the facility and greenhouse in New Jersey, where IFF creates the steam room for flowers of the most exotic origins, as well as other raw materials. Various steam room analyses were carried out specifically to support the creation of this fragrance. Caribbean atmosphere.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the creators of Masque Milano were working with IFF on the development of one of their previous fragrances, they heard about Fanny Bal, a young and promising student of Dominique Ropion (the master of vetiver). They heard about her talent and especially her penchant for working with a raw material such as vetiver, which is both beautiful and difficult. They knew then that they had found the next perfumer they wanted to work with. Working with Fanny, they had the pleasure of experimenting with one of their favourite ingredients – vetiver – in all the variations available in the wonderful fragrance library LMR (Laboratoire Monique Remy). They worked on balancing three different versions: vetiver from Haiti, woody, dry and spicy with a slight bitterness at the beginning that blends perfectly with the rhubarb note. Vetiver from Java is dirtier, with smoky notes and leathery facets. ‘Vetiver Heart’* is a fantastic raw material, producing a clean and dry vetiver note without any earthiness. With their Masque Milano line, they were known for discovering young noses who, after working together, developed a whole range of successful niche fragrances. ‘We wish Fanny the same meteoric rise, because she definitely deserves it!’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e*Steam distillation followed by fractional distillation to isolate the heart.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Our short message is an ode to a raw material we love – vetiver – and to a writer who inspired us both – Ernest Hemingway. We were looking for a perfumer with the right qualities for this creation when we heard about a promising young perfumer named Fanny Bal during a visit to IFF in Paris. That was in early 2017. During our research, we discovered that Fanny was a protégé of Dominique Ropion (famous for his Vetiver Extraordinaire...) and was herself passionate about vetiver. When we met her, it was definitely love at first sight. In her own words: ‘When I first met Riccardo and Alessandro, I felt a strong connection because they are both as passionate as I am. We speak the same language and sometimes don't even need words to understand each other. It was very easy to work with them because we immediately agreed on a fragrance direction for the new scene, which was to be based on vetiver, a raw material we all love.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFanny responded to our brief ideas by creating a fragrance for our line with the shortest list of notes. But hey, what a list! Three different types of the best quality vetiver money can buy: vetiver heart, vetiver oil from Haiti, vetiver oil from molecular distillation in Java – all three produced by Laboratoire Monique Remy. All crowned by a fantastic opening of ginger oil (also LMR) and rhubarb. The short list of notes does not mean that the fragrance is simple. On the contrary: like Hemingway's prose – where short, pointed sentences point to a deeper meaning – the perfume style of (Homage to) Hemingway is minimalist in terms of notes, but extremely complex in its development (especially on the skin).\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe achieved this result through the use of outstanding natural raw materials: the complexity of each of these breathtaking substances would be enough to make a finished perfume out of this single ingredient; through the overdose of vetiver: the prima donna of this creation takes up almost the entire stage. The three oils account for almost 60% of the total weight in the formula. This, combined with a concentration of 20%, makes Hemingway most likely the fragrance with the highest vetiver concentration on the market. We added an unexpected Caribbean vibe: we avoided the bergamot and lime clichés and created the liveliness of typical citrus top notes without using citrus notes: fresh, lemony and spicy ginger paired with the sour facets of rhubarb. We were finally able to arrange a meeting in Grasse in January 2019. After spending the morning at the IFF in Grasse smelling fragrances and wonderful raw materials, we went for lunch and, after toasting our budding collaboration with an excellent, full-bodied red wine that Mackenzie chose from the wine list, we presented our project for a fragrance with the theme ‘Alice’ and asked Mackenzie if she liked the idea of immersing herself in the character of Alice. ‘My friends call me Alice,’ was her eloquent reply.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Working on this project was a great adventure. I loved the challenge of creating a sophisticated gourmand fragrance for the niche world. Masque Milano had never created a gourmand fragrance before, and that can be tricky territory for a high-end luxury brand. The challenge was to create a fragrance that is delicious, addictive and comforting, yet intellectual, intriguing and high-quality. We had meetings in New York City and Grasse, both in the office and in the field. It was important for us to smell raw materials together and conduct some gourmand tastings of interesting flavour combinations and unique desserts for inspiration. We had many interesting brainstorming sessions about how to tell the story of Lost Alice and her mad tea party, how to distort proportions, disrupt familiar notes and create something that takes the wearer on a journey through the looking glass.’ – Mackenzie Reilly\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat does a mad tea party smell like? Earl Grey tea is the first element, along with many sweet treats. So we started by working with Mackenzie to find the right English tea accord – paired with bergamot, of course. Then we moved on to the heart notes, where we wanted to recreate a delicious carrot cake. During a meeting in New York, Mackenzie conjured up 12 delicious doughnuts with the most unusual flavours (including volcanic salt, rose petals, olive oil, caramel ...). A true sensory experience that gave us several ideas for how to proceed. At every stage of the creation process, it was important to remember that this fragrance is part of the act of dreaming. Just as Alice in the novel first shrinks and then grows to enormous size, the ‘objects’ in our fragrance should appear in the wrong proportions, with the teacup much larger than the teapot and gigantic cakes and scones so big that you can't dip them in.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘First of all, Lost Alice is not a typical gourmand. It has gourmand characteristics, but also facets of citrus fruits, woods, flowers, musk, resins and herbs. In fact, it's a little mystery... much like Alice herself; difficult to define and elusive. The top notes of the fragrance consist of fresh tea notes containing bergamot, black pepper, sage and mate absolute. The heart notes develop into a delicious cake with ginger, carrot, iris, rose and broom absolute. The finish is an addictive, enveloping blend of fleur de lait, steamed milk and musk. I think the journey from the top note to the base is really special because it develops so strongly and so gently on the skin, while still surprising you with every new note that emerges.’ – Mackenzie Reilly\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen creating the steamed milk accord, we wanted to achieve something very warm, inviting, creamy and nostalgic. I wanted to offer Masque Milano fans a true mimosa fragrance, so I opted for an overdose of Mane's mimosa absolute, which best represents the natural scent of mimosa. It is a quality as rich as the natural head of mimosa with an elegant powdery facet.\u003cbr\u003eMimosa blossom also has a cucumber-like texture. We wanted a particularly seductive accord in our creation that would make you want to smell the fragrance again and again, without venturing into the gourmand realm (i.e. avoiding the excessive use of modern cotton candy notes from ethyl maltol). One idea was to use natural honey for this unexpected addictiveness – and Alex wanted to use a lot of it. The golden colour of the honey would enhance the luminosity of the fragrance. When we smelled some of the variations, we had the impression of taking a bath in a giant jar of honey. – Alessandro and Riccardo\u003cbr\u003eInitially, my instinct told me to follow my strength and create a heavy, sweet oriental fragrance, but in the end I wanted to counteract that and create an ultra-fresh interpretation of the flower.
