It is a warmly sensual, addictive, dark scent which evokes the private, mysterious side we like to keep secret.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlchemic transformation\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSometimes I mention Alchemy, which has always been mostly a cultural interest to me. It’s not a direct source of inspiration but more a sort of hidden pattern in the process of perfume making. The magic of Alchemy is the transformation into a new status or dimension (either material or spiritual) through a particular process. Talking about perfumery, the materials I add in my experiments end up creating something new, they evolve into something new and unpredictable, which simply didn’t exist before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike an Alchemic transformation, which is not theoretical, you HAVE to go through that very process to achieve a new dimension. In other words, if you limit yourself to the theoretical aspect or the formula (or just reading a book without living your life), and you don’t physically go through a process, or an experience, you will NEVER achieve the transformation. There’s something mystical and carnal at the same time in this truth, and I feel so satisfied in doing something which put together such opposite elements and allow me to witness the creation of something which ‘was not’ before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eI will tell you a secret about The Dark Side\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI love woody warm sweet woody oriental stuff, and this scent is my attempt in this category. This is the most complex among my scents, made up by lots of components which I tried to mix in the smoothest way I could. So many components that, if you ask me, I have to look up the formula, of whom the pyramid I published is just a synthesis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe funny thing is, I worked so much on the balance of so many ingredients that I forgot how it all started. It all started in Marrakesh, one of my favorite city, which I visited at 28 and then 39, always coming back with plenty of fake oils, scented stones, resins to burn, carpets, swords, and other useless thus crucial objects. Last time I came back with many smelly bottles, among which a delicious fake agarwood oil. I have never been a fan of it — as it was so fashionable lately, and I really hate fashions — but this one is different. So, once home, I tried to make my own base inspired by this Moroccan fake oud, thus creating a sticky sweet woody smoky oriental stuff, which I called ‘My Oud’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome time after, I started my Dark Side project (at the time named ‘Into Darkness’) and integrated this base in it. By doing so, I added in due proportion all ingredients of ‘My Oud’ into the bigger formula of Dark Side. After that, I made so many other variations during the following months while searching for a further harmony, that I simply forgot that the soul of ‘My Oud’ was in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnly a frag lover’s review — wondering about the possibility of the presence of Oud, which of course was not enlisted in the pyramid — made me remember about my lovely fragrant memory from Marrakesh. Among the scents, I have to mention specifically the beautiful Lipstick Rose by Frédéric Malle for the ‘make-up’ memories. Also, Putain de Palace by État Libre d’Orange gave me some inspiration, not for the olfactive profile but for the sensual juxtaposition of a very feminine seduction and decadent dirty sensuality—and the Rococo mood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo I started to study my way into an innocent, light-as-a-feather feminine touch but at the same time seducing, daring and corrupt. The vintage, old-style twist was not voluntary but a necessary consequence of my idea of a femininity of past times, where women had a wooden boudoir and spent hours to put powder and other beauty secrets on their face and body, and didn’t care to affirm themselves through a career but would exert their power through beauty and seduction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen I softened the powdery-iris-rose part by adding a mixture of resins, representing a dirty experienced sensuality. Odor Edit mentioned Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which is exactly the sophisticated and corrupted atmosphere I had in mind!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA beautiful memory I had is the Marie Antoniette in the Coppola’s movie. I obviously like Rococo, but what I like specifically in that movie is the femininity she represents: shoes, sins, libertinage, cakes, and absolute mindlessness, without any guiltiness. Many have compared Angel’s Dust to some Guerlain mythological scents. During my childhood and teenage I used to spend lots of time at the sea side. One of the strongest memory of that time is the smell of my skin, which I liked to sniff like a junkie. Then my parents sold the house at the sea side, and university, work, boyfriends etc. brought me far from that memory. Five years ago I moved to the Netherlands and I forgot the smell of my sweaty salty skin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome times back I bumped into a face cream of L’Occitaine containing Immortelle. The odour of that plant is actually not so pungent in that cream, nonetheless it was strongly pulling out of my head the childhood memory of my skin. I confess I had totally neglected the essential oil of Helichrysum which was sitting on my shelf, unused and ignored. So now I smelled it again, with a new nose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI worked on a special amber accord, I would say — begging for your understanding — more human than oriental. A Civet tincture reinforced this intimate-human atmosphere, while a special ambergris molecule added the mineral-salty touch. So this was the starting point: a sun-burnt, sweaty, salty skin — one of the most comfortable, and probably pervert souvenir I had in my heart. Well, while working on this core idea, inevitably other dirty-minded ideas popped up, and I added to this weird yet innocent idea a more sultry, sinful, decadent fantasy of remotely tropical, creamy, sticky skin after a sexual intercourse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis might not make sense to those of you who didn’t tested it. Believe me, you can wear it without being recruited in a hard core movie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePS: A dear friend of mine–whose identity will be kept secret–asked me for this perfume specifically because (I quote): “I need to find a boyfriend”. So after adding materials going into the heavy or sweet or stable-like animalic theme, I had to eliminate them little by little, and arrive to this solution which suits me the best: a leathery, slightly animalic, powdery one, a velvety and elegant take. It goes along with my personality and my style and when I finally realized that this was my way, I was finally happy and relieved. The name comes from a conversation with an artist and fragrance lover, who told me that the scent looks like coming out of the skin, and not being sprayed from outside. This concept of ‘Under My Skin’ reinforced my path of going into something more subtly ’human’ than overtly ‘animal’. The core of the scent is a combination of animalic and leathery notes tamed by iris butter (at 15% irone!).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter working on this core, I worked on the base, made up by Tolu Balsam, Peru Balsam, Tonka Bean and several woods. Last step of the job was the opening, where I used grapefruit and lavender. I used to be a ‘Lavender hater’: but here it plays a subtle and elegant part. The evolution then delves deeper into the soul of this stern character, revealing the presence of a secret mistress, with a powdery rose rounding up the deep core made of vetiver. The darker side is conveyed in a much more subtle way, not immediately detectable, via cumin and other spices, and a large selection of animalistic notes, including a reconstruction of Tonkin Musk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI thought of naming this perfume ‘Feeling Good’, as that is its purpose: to make you feel as you might in paradise, not a fake, imaginary one, but a real place where you finally cope with the darker side of you, with the heavy baggage that you carry with you. The opening immediately puts on the table the powerful weapons: an intense, almost boozy patchouli and leather. It is somehow wild and carefree, dangerously dressed in leather but playful. The dry-down gets softer and more complex, thanks to a dirty iris butter which makes the whole atmosphere smoother and more intriguing. Don’t get fooled by iris, no romance is going on here: tobacco leaves are rolled, the leather jacket is eventually thrown somewhere, and the delightful and tempting smell of skin finally emerges. Many intertwined reasons and personal mental associations led me to this creation and its title.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis perfume is conceived to be as tempting as chocolate stuck all over your fingers and you cannot help but licking them. Mind you: this is not a gourmand fragrance, and licking your fingers is a metaphor referring to other kind of irresistible temptations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne major reference is surely the iconic album from 1971. I love rock, and the 70s for what they brought in music, but especially, I love that album cover. It accompanied me for a long while, as a vinyl record shop just around the corner was displaying it on its window, and I was exposed to it every day. Besides, this is an accord that I only recently started to emotionally connect with. But I wanted to push it further, challenging its traditional boundaries by introducing an unexpected twist: a vibrant accord of tropical fruits, with juicy, mouthwatering mango at its heart.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThis exotic note disrupts the predictable accord of the fougère, rewiring it into something both familiar and surprising.
